Police investigating death of St. Paul man attacked at Checkerboard Pizza

St. Paul Police confirmed today that they're investigating the death of 34-year-old Nicholas James Keilen of St. Paul.

Keilen died over the weekend and police were notified of the man's death Monday morning.

Police are investigating a June 5 attack that apparently left Keilen with severe brain and organ damage.

St. Paul Police spokesperson Howie Padilla confirmed that between 10 p.m. on Thursday, June 5 and 1 a.m. on Friday, June 6, Keilen was assaulted at Checkerboard Pizza, 992 Arcade St.

Keilen was hospitalized following the attack, Padilla said.

Due to the hospitalization, "police had been unable to speak directly with the victim," he added.

Padilla said police are "working with the medical examiner's office to determine the cause of his death."

Police are waiting for the medical examiner's office before any connection between the assault and the man's death is made.

Keilen's father, Gerhard Keilen, said he was unable to comment on the incident at this time -- he said police asked him not to speak on the matter, as the investigation is ongoing.

According to a Facebook post from a friend or family member, Keilen suffered brain and organ damage following the attack.

Staff at Checkerboard Pizza could not be reached for comment.

Police encourage anyone with additional information about the incident to call in tips to 651-266-5650.

This area is a notorious drugged up gangster neighborhood they refuse to handle because its not politically correct to point out the obvious. People getting robbed all over the neighborhood lately. Stores, driveways, backyard bbq's........Wish i could afford to move my kids away from it but thats life on the Eastside.

Why does it feel like the ball was dropped on this case. This has been over two months and there has not been any one arrested? Seems a little strange that nothing is being done.

Yes . They had security cameras and people there filmed it on cell phones.
Family and friends want to see people arrested. Nick was an awesome person who was full of positive energy and impacted many people with his kind spirit. He is dearly missed. The loss is so painful knowing those thugs are still on the street.
Please come forward if you were there. Shine some sunlight on the cockroaches so their nest can be stamped out.
